Build around space created by Lightning Mage

Lightning Mage is a Top module used in community builds for both damage and enemy control. Its main practical attraction is that slowing an advance through stun can give your castle time to move, recharge an escape or finish another target. Build around that opportunity. A stunned enemy is a chance to improve your position, not a reason to park beside a dangerous vehicle.

The recommendations below combine written community loadouts with official versioned changes. They establish useful build directions, but not a measured best damage ranking or a guaranteed stun against every enemy. Lightning Mage is also distinct from the Electric Arrow artifact: seeing lightning in an arrow build does not mean the Top module was equipped.

Choose a captain for the way you attack

Two documented directions are a Huntress magic setup and a Tankbert setup designed for longer survival. The Huntress recommendation starts with Spiderburg, Wizard Crew, Lightning Mage and Reset Lever, with Cauldron unlocked as another possible artifact. The Tankbert reports instead emphasize surviving long enough to develop health, movement and stronger attacks.

Huntress deserves care because her trade-off affects active ability timing. Hotfix 0.9.10 reduced her extra ability cooldown time from 50% to 40%. An automatic-attack-focused recommendation therefore does not imply that frequent active stuns arrive without a cost. If your survival depends on pressing the mage's active button as often as possible, account for that penalty before choosing the captain.

Tankbert is an alternative when you accept an opening Nitro drawback and want a longer run. A detailed player report pairs him with Merchants and Lightning Mage, then adds Teleporter, Cannon Tower and Dash. Read the Tankbert build route for that particular example. Its health development is a separate reason to choose the captain; it is not an inherent effect of Lightning Mage.

Give every support slot a clear role

Spiderburg is a useful starting point because community magic builds use two Top modules. The common skeleton is Lightning Mage plus another Top attack, a Front module and Dash at the back. Verify the chassis slots before adopting the list, especially if you are accustomed to a Side Cannon or Side Ballista build.

PositionCommunity optionsDecision to make
First TopLightning MageKeep its damage and control useful throughout the run
Second TopFire Mage or Cannon TowerAdd another damage source suited to the upgrades you find
FrontTeleporter, Force Mage or Front BarracksDecide between the suggested movement, control and attack variants
BackDashPreserve a movement option when ordinary driving is insufficient

Teleporter is the most directly documented Front choice in the longer Tankbert examples. The Huntress recommendation also lists Force Mage and Front Barracks as alternatives. These are choices between variants, not three modules you must somehow fit into one position. Changing the Front choice also changes what your build can do when enemies close in.

The Spiderburg guide covers its slot trade-off. Losing access to Side modules means the second Top position needs to contribute; it is not simply an extra slot added to a conventional broadside build.

Upgrade the part of the mage you actually need

Community advice consistently values Lightning Mage's cooldown and describes its automatic attacks as useful against advancing enemies. One later recommendation specifically focuses on automatic damage and cooldown with Stormcloud. Treat that as an upgrade direction, not a full level-by-level script: the source does not supply a complete sequence of every selected card.

When enemies remain close but die slowly, improving damage on the attack that is connecting addresses the immediate problem. When dangerous advances happen while the active ability is unavailable, investigate cooldown. If you are buying automatic damage while relying on the active ability for every emergency, recognize that those upgrades are developing different parts of the module.

Read the card rather than selecting by rarity alone. The recommendation to take rare and epic upgrades in the Merchants examples concerns those players' crew choices; it does not prove that every lower-rarity module improvement should be refused. The module upgrade guide explains how to separate automatic attacks, active abilities and special choices.

After each substantial upgrade, watch the next engagement. Check whether the mage now clears the small enemies that were blocking your route, whether the dangerous target is controlled, and whether the ability returns before you need it again. That gives the next choice a concrete purpose.

Use control before the escape lane disappears

Begin a difficult encounter by identifying the direction you will leave. Keep enough open ground to turn toward it while the mage works. If you wait until several threats occupy every side of the castle, one controlled target may not create enough space. The useful moment to spend an active ability is often while the approach is still manageable.

Move during the opening created by control. A short relocation can improve the next attack angle and prevent a surviving enemy from immediately reaching you when it resumes moving. Avoid circling so tightly around one stunned vehicle that a second threat cuts off your exit.

With Teleporter and Dash equipped, resist activating both simply because they are available. Use the tool that solves the current position and retain another response when possible. This is a recommended way to manage the build's options, not a fixed rotation: the reports do not establish exact cooldown synchronization or a permanent protection loop.

If you miss the intended control window, stop chasing damage and recover space. A module can be powerful while still failing to rescue a poor approach. Driving into the next group to finish a weakened target is especially costly when the mage and movement tools are all recharging.

Choose the second Top attack by its contribution

Fire Mage appears alongside Lightning Mage in an early Spiderburg report and in later community advice. The later recommendation develops Fire Mage's active ability and cooldown, while giving Lightning Mage automatic damage and cooldown attention. This creates two distinct upgrade jobs rather than assuming all magic upgrades are interchangeable.

Cannon Tower is another reported partner, including in the detailed Grasslands 3 run. It brings a different attack family and can support a knockback plan when the appropriate artifact appears. Do not assume a general magic artifact benefits it merely because it sits beside Lightning Mage.

Fire Mage is also suggested as a cheaper starting substitute when the player cannot afford Lightning Mage in the loadout. That is a budget route into a related magic setup, not proof that both modules provide identical control. If you start with Fire Mage, judge the opening by its actual behavior and keep room to move; do not expect Lightning Mage's reported stun utility from an unequipped module.

Prepare for Overtime without assuming permanent stun

The community Overtime advice singles out Lightning Mage as valuable against Metzelman and recommends low cooldown. It describes both automatic and active stun contributions. Official earlier hotfix notes also say certain late-Overtime enemies became susceptible to stun and slow. These support using control as part of a survival plan, but neither establishes that every enemy tier can be locked down indefinitely.

The safer goal is to maintain a useful distance between your castle and the threat. If you move away during each control opportunity, movement and stun support one another. If you remain in place, the build must repeatedly solve the same close-range danger with no margin for another enemy or a missed activation.

Strengthen movement before that margin disappears. If regular driving no longer opens a gap and both mobility abilities are constantly needed, another damage increase may arrive too late to matter. The Overtime survival guide covers the broader choice between speed, crowd control and damage.

Keep patch details and run claims in context

Official notes call this module the Top Electric Mage; player discussions also call it the Lightning Mage. An earlier hotfix increased its passive base damage per upgrade and active stun duration. Hotfix 0.9.10 then stopped Electric Mage from stunning allied units. Those are specific changes, not a published current damage table. They also explain why an older player's complaint about friendly units may not describe the behavior after that fix.

The strongest usable conclusion from the reports is the build's role: Lightning Mage can support a castle that survives through control and movement while developing damage. Captain, crew and the second Top module remain meaningful choices. Start with a complete plan for those roles, then adapt upgrades to the pressure visible in your own run instead of chasing an unverified claim of permanent safety.
